Framing, HDR

The doctoral student is placed under the control and responsibility of a thesis director. The scientific direction of the doctoral project may be carried out jointly with a co-director. When the co-director is a person from the socio-economic world who does not belong to the academic world, the number of co-directors may be increased to two.

Supervisors

The thesis director is one of the ED's HDRs. He/she is attached to ED 34 only and is a member of one of the laboratories attached to the ED. The assignment of an HDR to the ED34 is done automatically if the ED director has been asked to authorise the defence of the HDR, within the framework of his authority on the thematic perimeter of the ED or if the whole research team, to which the HDR belongs, is attached to the ED34. In the opposite case, a justified request (CV and motivated letter) from the HDR is transmitted to the director of the ED who decides on this assignment.
Any HDR can be a co-director of a thesis; this status is recognised for each thesis at the time of registration by decision of the ED director (see conditions in the ED's internal regulations).
Doctors who are not qualified to direct research may act as thesis co-directors (art. 16 of the Decree of 25 May 2016) provided they are chosen for their scientific competence by the head of the institution, on the proposal of the director of the ED and after the opinion of the research commission of the academic council or the body in place of it in the registration institution. Such recognition is thus the responsibility of the operating institutions: it follows from the procedure specific to each institution and is binding on the DE.
The status of supervisor is recognised for each thesis at the time of registration by decision of the director of the ED (see conditions in the ED's Internal Rules).
It is important that the allocation of the supervision rates of the different supervisors is properly completed on ADUM.

Supervision

The preparation of a thesis is based on the agreement freely concluded between the doctoral student and the thesis director. The reciprocal commitments are defined in the University of Lyon's doctoral charter, signed jointly by the doctoral student, the director and co-director, and the director of the research unit. The ED's internal regulations include a certain number of elements. In parallel, an accommodation agreement can be established between the doctoral student and the head of the institution, the purpose of which is to define the conditions under which the doctoral student is hosted in the laboratory to carry out his/her work. It refers in particular to the regulatory aspects of the working conditions in the laboratory as well as the rules of intellectual property.

Mediation procedure

In the event of a dispute concerning the progress of the thesis, mediation within the research unit is first sought. It is important that these disputes are identified as soon as possible with the management of the research units, the director of the ED and are explained during the Individual Thesis Monitoring Committee. In case of persistent conflict, the University of Lyon's doctoral charter and the Doctoral School's internal regulations describe the mediation procedure.

HDR

The habilitation to supervise research (HDR) is a national higher education diploma that can be obtained after a doctorate. It is defined by the decree of 23 November 1988.
The award of this diploma recognises the candidate's high scientific level, the original nature of his or her approach in a field of science, his or her ability to master a research strategy in a sufficiently broad scientific or technological field and his or her capacity to supervise young doctoral students.
The procedure for obtaining the HDR diploma, depending on the institution, can be accessed via the following links
